Tips on 'Staying On' in Your WFH (Workout from Home)

Since the start of the pandemic, many countries had enforced strict measures to curb it. It comes in various terms 'Circuit Breaker,' 'Lockdown,' 'Large Scale Social Restriction' and many others. Ultimately, it means to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travels and practise social distancing.

I am sure that most of you know about the benefits of keeping yourself healthy through this pandemic. Not only does it do wonders for your physical health, it can also elevate some of the stresses that arise during this stay-at home period. For many, exercising means going to the gym to workout. But when everyone is expected to stay indoors, keeping fit means most exercise happens at home. Some people ask, "Considering that I'm working from home or have limited space to workout, how do I keep myself motivated in maintaining my daily exercise routine?"

Here are some tips that you want to consider for your workout from home.

Maintain a regular routine

My wife shared, "I sometimes feel that Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday are all the same. I cannot distinguish the days because it all feels the same everyday." Sounds familiar? My suggestion is to have a regular routine. Set your workouts in your daily planner or a calendar where you can easily see them. This routine and consistency will help you block off any other plans on the stipulated time. Furthermore, you can monitor your personal progress too.

Suitable place for workout at home

Doing exercise at home does not need a big space. It is important that you find a spot that allows you the space to stretch and do the movements. A suggestion would be a place where you do not need to move your furniture too much. There is a lot of things that can be done with just a mat and towel. Look around, you'll find a spot.

Focus on quality not quantity

Personally, quality movements are better than quantity. Good posture and correct movement is more important than the number of repetitions you do. On that note, you can work out for 20 to 30 minutes and still get a good sweat in contrast to a normal gym workout that can last up to 60 minutes. This will tie in to my next point of seeking guidance from a fitness guru.

Seek guidance from those-in-the-know

While there are many uploaded videos on Youtube and numerous online classes, always find someone whom you feel knows what they are talking about regarding fitness, strength and conditioning as well as flexibility. Connect to those fitness gurus through the online classes. In the short run, you will get the maximum benefits from the workout and in the long run it will help to prevent injuries. These experts will help to correct your form and guide you accordingly.

Invite friends and family in the workout

Gyms can be a great place to find new friends. However, due to social distancing measures, it is impossible to do that. Offline workouts are now online. My suggestion would be to invite your friends or family to join the online sessions that you are in. Have a family challenge and see who is the best. It doesn't hurt to spice things up with some friendly competition. Be creative! I had a family who used the song 'Sally Up' to create a plank challenge among themselves.

Vary your workout and have fun with it There is a variety of workouts that you can find on Youtube, Instagram, and Zoom (nowadays). Find a different exercise to do daily. It will help to prevent boredom and flex different muscle groups. Keep those muscles guessing what's in store every day. Last, don't forget to have FUN.

Hope these tips can help you keep motivated while you workout from home. So there is no reason for you to not to keep yourself healthy and fit. In the meantime, stay at home, stay safe and stay healthy.
