I would like to acknowledge my friend, Nadzi who shared this wonderful article. In addition, the article was written and published in the Cambridge Assessment International Education on 3 Oct 2019 by Judith Roberts.
It is reported in a study from the Sport and Academic Performance Report (2019) found that 28.4% of undergraduate sportspeople gained first class honours as compared to 23.7% in the University as a whole. The percentage of second class upper was also higher 63% in the similar group as compared to 51.8% to the other undergraduates. Individual sportspeople interviewed for the research also noted how physical activity was an important release from academic studies, improving their mental health and helping them develop valuable social networks.
The University's research adds to the findings of the 2018 British Universities and Colleges Sport Active Students Survey. One of the survey's key conclusions was that physical activity improves personal and mental well-being, social inclusion, perceived academic attainment ad employability.
These two studies resonate in me. As an experienced Physical Education teacher,I concur and believe that physical activities have links to academic achievements. It's fundamental that the PE curriculum not only focuses on the mastery of skills but also helps to develop healthy patterns that can last a lifetime. Additionally, it also encourages creativity, collaboration, leadership and responsibility.
These articles can also be used resource for you to strengthen your case to increase the Physical Education budget.
For parents, I highly encourage your child to participate in team sports which can actually help them to improve their self-esteem and confidence in handling conflicts.
Henceforth, I call upon my fellow Physical Educators to conduct lessons which can impact on their students well-being. I also urged parents to look at Physical Education lessons as an integral subject for their child's growth.
