Sleeping and Resting - Part of the training

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

In our daily lives, we sometimes tend to overlook one of the key aspects that is important to maintaining good health. The importance of sleep and rest has an impact on our body especially as we grow older. Let me share the difference between sleep and rest.

Sleep

During sleep, the brain does not work as actively as when we are awake and we do not have full consciousness about our surroundings.

Rest

When we rest, we are allowing our body a period of relaxation during exercise and/or work

Effects of lack of Sleep and Rest

There are detrimental results that we are placing to our health, body and outlook when we deprived ourselves of sleep and rest.

Sleep deprivation will lead to lowering of the body's metabolism and increase risk of obesity and diabetes. A person lacking in sleep tends to get angry and agitated easily. (Sounds familiar?) It can decrease work performance as the lack of sleep will lead to neurons not firing optimally, muscle fatigue, and the body's organs systems not in sync.

Lack of rest during exercise and/or work will not help to build muscles strength as well as endurance. It will lead to injuries too. Furthermore, without rest, there is no work life balance.

Recommendations of sleep and rest

1. Sleep 6 to 7 hours of sleep

2. Use a dim light by the bed

3. Avoid heavy meals before bedtime (Hmm..)

4. Put away handphones and avoid sleeping near it (I am guilty of it, too!!)

5. Power nap of 10 to 15 minutes long (not longer than that) will help to boost concentration, mood, and learning.

6. During exercises, the muscles need at least 30 - 90 seconds of rest to achieve optimal results.

7. Scheduled a massage day or meditate or other forms relaxation techniques that you can find.

8. Get away from the kids for a period of time (I know it's stretchy but YOU need it because you are WORTHY!!)
