Trekking, Walking and Hiking? Any differences and what are its benefits?

Walking, Trekking and Hiking

Over the course of years, we have discovered several ways to exercise, workout and help in getting a better physical and mental health. While some 'hit' the gym, some may play sports, some go into yoga or pilates and some may choose to walk, trek or hike. I thoroughly enjoy all these 3 outdoor activities in which I would like to share with you the differences and benefits of all 3.

Walking

Some of us started walking as young as we reached 1 years old. From there, we may have covered many kilometers over the years. By definition, walking is a typical casual activity usually done in a more urban environment on a road or pavement. I am sure you had heard of those walking 10 000 steps a day will reap some health benefits. I strongly recommend this activity if you have bad knees recovering from some diseases. It is inexpensive and it is usually done in the morning or evenings. A study conducted by the CDC recommends you walk at least an hour a day, five days a week to reduce the onset of stroke and other comorbid diseases.

Hiking

Hiking involves a long energetic walk in a natural environment on hiking trails or footpaths for a day or overnight. This activity is more strenuous than walking. For beginners, it is recommended that before embarking on a hike, do 'chalk up' some hours on walking to build up your stamina. In addition, a walking stick is advised if you are attempting to hike up elevated areas. Remember to bring water and some wet weather clothes just in case if you encounter any inclement weather.

Trekking

Some people used trekking and hiking almost interchangeably. However, there is difference between the two. It usually involves long vigorous hike in wild natural environment for multiple days. It can be done off hiking trails and it can be anywhere from 50 kilometres and 24 000 kilometres and up. Trekking requires more logistics and proper planning from hiking. A local shepherd is there to guide the group. Some of the logistics include enough and proper clothing (depends on where you are trekking and the environment you are in), rations such as food and water, walking sticks. first aid, compass are some items that you may need for a good and safe trekking.

Benefits of walking, hiking and trekking

As mentioned earlier, I love these 3 activities and always ready to get involve in it any time (provided it suits the timing).

Lowers the risk of heart disease and improves blood pressure

Due to the nature of these activities that involves the movement of your body and lower extremities, it will certainly boost your stamina and heart. As a person who is diagnosed with high blood pressure, I would still recommend these activities for those who share the same plight as me. These activities if done regularly will improve heart and blood pressure, reducing the onset of stroke.

Improve overall fitness

Walking is an inexpensive activity over hiking and trekking. Trekking can be considered expensive as it requires some logistics and some travelling. Regardless, these 3 activities will help to build up the thighs, lover leg muscles, hip muscles and hamstrings. It also builds up the endurance. Hiking and trekking are both weight bearing exercises which can build up bone density. As you need to carry a heavy backpack in a trekking session, it helps in the core strength too.

Walking, hiking and trekking burns calories

Walking for about 10 000 steps burns about 470 calories while trekking and hiking burns about 450 to 500 calories per hour. With these burn calories, it helps you to lose weight and tone your muscles. Based on my experiences, I usually use these activities intermittently. I combine it with some weight bearing exercises to help me for longer hike and trek. Furthermore, it will help me carry my backpack and face with different elements of weather along the way.

Improve of mental health

Walking, trekking and hiking offers unique experiences. I usually used different routes for my walking activity and different areas to hike. Prior to COVID, I like to travel to different countries trek their mountain areas. Through this, I was able to engage with people who share similar interests like me and exchange ideas. Furthermore, I am able to learn about the culture and customs of the countries I visit. I feel this definitely boosts my mental health. In addition, it helps me in my creativity too. Hitting the trail helps me to put my life in perspective and take my mind off my worries.

Before you go embark on these activities, please check with your doctor. Prepare yourself mentally and physically. In addition, make sure you have the proper logistics. Most importantly, have fun while doing it. Everyone has their pace and ability, don't compare yourself with other seasoned walkers, trekkers and hikers.
